Squash Club report for the Grange Club AGM 2014
Membership:
As at the beginning of December 2013, Grange Squash Club has 130
members regularly playing in the competitions and mini-leagues.
Courts continue to be hired at The Academy Sports Centre to ease the
peak-time pressure. Paid membership of the squash club is just over
the 200 mark.
Juniors:
Junior membership has been very successful and is again coached and
mentored by Fiona McLaren and John Bain. Every Saturday afternoon
John and Fiona give up their day for the coaching sessions, and also
travel to competitions with the juniors. Their contribution to the
future of squash cannot be over-stated.
Courts:
The new courts are taking shape and at the end of last year were on
schedule. This is a very exciting time for the Grange club in general
and the squash club in particular, and we look forward to the new
courts opening in May.
Competitions:
We run several competitions for the members with all being keenly
contested. The mini-leagues continue to be a great success and The
Grange Open was organised for the first time by Kevin Moran, and was
very successful in both the number of entrants and the quality of
entrants.
Open
Teams: The Open teams have reduced to 4 teams this season after
losing a few key players over the summer. Demand is still high
and we field 4 team each week with ease with teams in Divs 1, 3,4 and
5. The 1s are currently struggling with level in Div 1 as we
still find it hard to attract players at the upper end of the
squash ability spectrum however its hoped that the success of the GO
and National League side will help attract more players to
the club. The other teams are competing well within their
respective leagues and should all have genuine shots at promotion.
Ladies’
Teams: At the end of the first half of the ladies season, Grange
1 came a very respectable 2nd, behind the runaway winners of ESC 1.
We won 7 out of 10 games against some stiff opposition and in the
face of several injuries and study leave.
Grange
2 suffered a bit from having to sub up to the firsts and we still
managed to win 5 out of 10 games. We were in danger of gaining
promotion to the first division but could only muster 3 players for
our final game. So, we finished very comfortably in 3rd place.
Congrats to Edinburgh University and Waverley 2 for gaining promotion
to the 1st division.
Treasurer’s
Report: The Squash Club finances are extremely healthy at the
moment, with balances showing of £1,165 in the old Gameball account;
£3,782 in the old Juniors, social and Competition subs account; and
£1,116 in the new consolidated account; giving a round total of
£6,063. This is entirely due to the efforts of David
Grieve with Gameball, Dougie Brown with the competition subs, and
Fiona McLaren and John Bain with the Juniors. Many thanks to all
of them. This means the squash section can easily make its
promised contribution of £2,500 to the building costs for the new
courts.
Social:
The regular Friday night squash club remains very popular with
newcomers, potential members (most sign up) and regulars alike.
Plans:
From May 2014 we will have 5 squash courts, two of them new
state-of-the art glass-backed courts. The club intends to grow the
numbers of squash members.
Acknowledgements:
I would like to thank the squash committee (all volunteers) for the
past years in continuing to run the mini-leagues, competitions,
juniors, teams, club-nights, socials, accounts and IT. Thanks also to
general committee and membership and our members for the fantastic
club spirit we have.
Finally
a huge thanks to Christy Looby, who is taking a sabbatical after many
years of imagination, hard work and enthusiasm in all his roles as
Squash Club mover and shaker. I’m sure Christy will enjoy his
hard-earned rest.
