Thirds home v Bank o'Scotland(Thurs, Jan 31)

Matt Pearson came from his sick bed and gave Mike Smith a good run for his money in a long match,
I was on the the other court so didn't see much of it. I didn't see much of the ball for the first game of my match with John Burnet but stayed on court warming the ball and Gorzer told me to stop going for the boast so early. This got me into my hitting, so much so that John didn't trouble the scoreboard for 2 whole games. The fourth say John get a bit of a lead but luckily I was in control and reeled him in with the help of a few tins  in winning positions from John.
Stokes and Robin both complained that court 1 was cold with it being difficult to get any pace on the ball. They shared to first 2 going to extra points on both but after that Robin pulled away 3-1. I reffed Gorzer v Phil Brown, this was a competitive match with no lack of controversy but good respect between the players, it went to five and Mike finished the better 3-2.
Colin Williamso was 2 games down to Rob Norris when I looked in, Colin was moving and hitting very well to get a lead but Rob is made of stern stuff and hunted him down to extra points where Colin did set-1.
Gasp! Followed by tin. From Colins racket. Cue a big rush back to the pavilion so we could catch his Dad to impress on Colin that "You never set-1 in a team match, son". Colin alleged he was tired but Rob said he was blowing a bit as he leant on his racket to stop himself crumpling in a heap on the floor.
Only Rob came back to the pavilion so the banter was a bit Grange-centric and there was enough pizza left over to feed the barman, Charlie and a doggy bag for Stokes lunch the day after.

Seconds @ Waverley (Wed, Jan 30)

Waverley the visitors to Grange on Wednesday night.  With Waverley at bottom of the table, we thought we could give them a good run for their money and despite Sloan Ranger's best efforts to hinder things, it was a successful night for the club...

At 5, the experienced Dougie Brown started slow but soon warmed up and walked off happily wth a 3-1 win vs. John Usher.  A close 4th & 5th game but well clawed out by Dougie.

Forbes at no. 4 - and like Dougie lost the first game but came back to take it 3-1.  Match of the evening goes to Wee Wallace at no. 3 who took on the mighty Dave Ferguson.  Wallace took the 1st game confidently but sat back in 2nd & 3rd finding himself alot to do.  The 4th game went to the wire - see-sawing between the two at the end of the game with Wallace victorious 10-9.  But... the 5th went Waverley's way - Dave taking it 9-6.  A fairly epic game lasting over the hour and a combined 59 points.  Willstrop & Matthews would be proud!

Walker at 2nd position looked fairly comfortable taking Pete Cochrane in 3 games.  Pete playing too much this week to sustain a strong performance.  For Captain Sloan, it was the exact opposite.  Helen Nicoll taking me to the cleaners and if the truth be known, I wasn't really in it.  More time on court required...

On the whole though, another successful night for the home club - established in mid-table position following a good start to 2013.  Long may this form continue.

National League @ Dalgety Bay (Tue, Jan 29)

A wind-blown trip across the bridge saw us arrive safely in Dalgety. The Bay were missing Neil Bennett (though he was there to support) and Iain Tennant but their strength-in-depth is such that even with our strongest side, it was going to be touch-and-go if we could get a badly needed win.
The Bay supporters gathered and were treated to some great squash, sportingly applauding good play regardless of whose racket it came off.

Terriffic effort - Cath had her hands full against a very capable 16yo and was beginning to get into her stride but PAR-11 doesn't allow the luxury of a slow start.
#4 E Young b C John 11-1 11-4 11-6

Return of Hamer was like he'd never been away, stuck with his man but just shaded out of it in the first, he again stuck with him on the scoreboard for the second and played some great percentage squash to get a game on extra points. Not at his fittest, he was on the back foot for the next two games but he'd done enough hopefully to get us the bonus points.
#3 R Northin b A Hamer 11/9 10-12 11/6 11/7

Douglas was hampered by a sore ankle and survived game ball against him in the first against the legend that is John Meadley. After that he was in control, but not until he'd sent me on a wild goose chase around the wilds and mud of Dalgety for ice.
#2 J Meadley l D Kempsell 11-13 8-11 7-11

Kevin was uber-dominant in the first two games, reducing Allan Tasker to frustrated exhibition shots. The third was closely contested, Kevin was peerless with his forehand volleys clinging to perfect dying length.
#1 A Tasker l K Moran 2/11 1/11 9/11

Matches 2-2 tied, won on games countback 7-6, earning points bonus 3
Result 10-7
Back to the Hillend Tavern for pots of Chilli with lots of hot condiments. Dalgety have joined the online-bookings set along with Linlithgow and Grange, a sure sign of a progressive club.
