Grange 4 versus Dean 2 –Tuesday 11/02/2014; Venue – Edinburgh Academy sports centre
First up was myself and Mike Douglas playing at 4 & 3 respectively. I was playing Derek Mills and a I managed to shade a tight first set 10-8, this set the tone for the rest of the match and took the rubber 3-0 winning 10-8, 9-4, 9-5. Meanwhile on the other court Mike was playing Michael Clarkson and after a titanic struggle in the first set which saw Mike triumph 10-8, no one saw the collapse that was about to happen coming, as Mike was out on his legs and quickly lost the next 3 sets in quick time to lose the rubber 3-1 with a score of 8-10, 9-0, 9-1, 9-0.
Rocco was playing Alex Ward-Gittos at #5. Alex took the first set 10-8, picking up some fine returns from some loose shots by Rocco, and Rocco returned the favour in the second set taking the rubber 10-8. Rocco began to impose himself on the match and took the third rubber 9-5, into the fourth rubber and Rocco was up 4-1 when a loose return by Alex was seized upon by Rocco who somehow managed to smack Alex in the mouth with the back of his hand. A medical timeout allowed Alex to get patched up before returning to court to try and finish the match, but after being hit in the mouth, Alex was a bit wary of getting to close to Rocco and Rocco closed out the match taking the rubber 9-1. 3-1 win to Rocco 8-10, 10-8, 9-5, 9-1.
Anthony was next on court playing Peter McCallum @ #2. Some fine squash by Anthony saw him take the first rubber 9-5, Anthony’s mind then wandered a bit as Peter took the second rubber 9-2. Normal service was resumed with Anthony quickly closing out the match winning the next 2 rubbers 9-1, 9-1. 3-1 win to Anthony 9-5, 2-9, 9-1, 9-1.
Andrew Claymore was playing Craig Wallace @ #1. Craig had the upper hand in the first rubber winning 9-5, Andrew bounced back taking the second 9-2, the third was a much tighter affair with around with both players playing some good squash in a long game which Andrew eventually edged 10-9. Andrew had the upper hand by now and took the match and fourth rubber for a 3-1 win, 5-9, 9-2, 10-9, 9-2.
Match results including ref points was 18-8 to Grange 4 and this moved us up to second in the table on equal points with Waverley 3, with 3 games to go. We need a strong finish to keep second place and a visit to the league leaders CCS5 will be the crucial match. We then went down to Luigi’s for beer and pizza to round the evening off, soft drinks and water were optional.

Back to Back Wins for Grange 2s
Last week the 2s were across town at Abercorn who were currently sitting at the top of Division 3. Somewhere we were aspiring to be!
A tight match with wins coming from Pete Cockburn, Ian Forbes and Allan Wallace. Captain Sloan and Gorzer both went down in five meaning an impressive points haul for the visitors.
Last night we hosted our Neighbours Dean who we lost to in the first half of the season. Another win for Pete Cockburn now doubling his tally for the season! Allan Wallace this time on the losing end of a five setter against Matt Hunter. Ian Forbes was on form as he took down Rich Maspero in 4. Gorzer at fourth string kept his composure to take James Birkhead done in 3 in a very tight match. Super Sub Georgie J also kept her head against the very awkward David Thomson to win in 3.
An impressive couple of weeks from the second team has definately thrown us in the mix!!

Grange 4 versus HWU 4 – -Wednesday 05/02/2014; Venue – Heriot Watt University
Tonight’s game was at the Watt and we were playing on courts 1 & 2.
Rocco was first up playing Paul Anderson at #5 on court 2. Rocco was welcomed to the game with a swish of the racquet that hit him on the bridge of the nose and drew blood, he was more worried that this was close to rearranging the recent dental work that he had done, but no damage was done and Rocco quickly wrapped up the game 3-0, 9-7, 9-3, 9-4. Maybe a look at the i-mask visor system might be in order.
Mike had the pleasure of playing Alistair McConnell on court 1 and both players and marker were experiencing difficulty in seeing the ball coming off the front wall. Mike saw the game out 3-0, 9-2, 9-6, 10-8.
Next up was Pete Young playing Gordon Frost at #2 on court 2, which was the conventional court with a solid white wall, that you could easily see the ball coming back at you. Pete was comfortably in command taking the first set 9-4 and 8-2 up in the second with us all thinking that it would be just a formality of seeing the second set out, but a lapse in concentration saw Gordon rally and take the set 10-9, nobody saw that one coming. Pete then raced to the third set 9-0 with Gordon obviously having a rest after his efforts in the second, the fourth set was much more balanced affair with Gordon eventually taking it 10-8. 2 games apiece and into the fifth, Pete was not able to keep up with the pace of Gordon and lost the fifth set 3-9 for a win to Gordon 3-2, 4-9, 10-9, 0-9, 10-8, 9-3.
Meanwhile I was playing Catherine Walshe @ #4 on court 1 and the same complaint was heard about losing sight of the ball on the front wall. I had too much experience for Catherine and took the match 3-0, 9-3, 9-7, 9-6.
With the tie safe at 3-1 to the Grange, it was down to the No. 1’s to take to the court, both players agreed to wait until court 2 was available to play the match and Anthony was taking on Evan Teviotdale. The game was close and Anthony nearly always had the upper hand and took the final rubber 3-0, 9-6, 9-6, 9-6.
Match results including ref points was 19-3 to Grange 4 which strengthened our position of third in the league. We were treated to our choice of Chicken, Cheeseburger or Burger served in a basket with chips. Our hosts eventually left us to finish off our drinks, before we headed off into the night satisfied with our haul of points.

Grange 2s Vs Watsonians 3 (29th Jan 2014)
First blog post in a while. Is it because we only sing when we are winning?
Another convincing result for Grange 2's
Wednesday 29th January saw Watsonian's 3rd team pay Grange a visit. A fine result for Grange cements a strong league position and reputation as a team to be feared.
Aoife at no. 5 took three games comfortably. Gorzer at no. 4 raced to a 2-0 lead vs. Ian Clarke but took his foot of the pedal... the fourth game particularly tough to watch with the match poised at 8-8, Ian confirming 'Set 1' and Gorzer slamming the tin to push on into five games! The fifth moving swiftly in Ian's favour, ending 3-2 to the visitors.
At no. 3, Forbes seemed to take things comfortably, winning in three games. A similar story for Wallace who closed out his game swiftly vs. Chris Green (only to continue going after securing the win). At no. 1, yours truly dropped a game but managed the win vs. a keen Jim Dougal.
Overall, the 2's have 170 points and remain secure in Division 3 with the prospect of promotion not too far away!
