Fours at Colinton Castle 4's(Fri, Nov 3,'11)

4ths are spanked!

Last Friday the 4’s with a slightly changed team, due to many players washing their hair that evening, took themselves of to Colinton Castle to play their 4th team.

Even with the average age of the team significantly reduced, due to Colin Williamson playing his first match of the season and Catherine John making her debut, our youth policy didn’t pay off. We were well and truly spanked, with the exception of Catherine!

I had the honour of umpiring Catherine’s game against John Stohlner, an experienced opponent. It was a classic with everything including dodgy umpiring calls! The highlight was the fifth game where John, looking dead and buried after Catherine took the 4th game to level, found some extra reserves to sprint into an 8-0 lead. I am not suggesting John took any substances during the break although a rolled up fiver and some powder resembling flour was found in the toilets later! However, his new found exuberance suddenly started to wear off and Catherine admirably started to play some copybook squash and claw her way back into the match saving three match points to eventually lead the game 9-8 with a match point of her own. Unfortunately the fairytale ended their and John after a wipe down of his face with a towel, (was there any substances in that!), managed to take back serve and close it out at 10-9. A classic game and well done to Catherine for standing in at short notice and showing the rest of the team how a technically correct squash shot should be played.

There is really not much else to say about the other games because as you will see from the results below the four of us didn’t exactly cover ourselves in glory. Well done to a strong Colinton team.

Anyway we are ‘straight back on the horse’ as we have a match tonight and hope to report much better news shortly. (B Sloan)
