Anyone know how Grange 1 manaaged to finish 3rd in division 1 in season 1982/3 and then second in division 2 in the following season?

The data is correct. It was when Drew MacKenzie, Roy Harley, Sandy Buchan, Ian Sinclair and Alan Stone-Wigg were the Grange 1 team.

It looks to me like the league positions were as published at the end of the season but subsequently an infringement was discovered, they were penalised by the league secretary/Lothian Squash committee/AGM and the team took 20 years to recover.

The sudden drop from Div 2 in 1995/6 is due to more innocent goings-on. Drew, Rab & Jim Litterick all left 'cos the squash president at the time was a bit anti-team so they all de-camped to ESC.

Grange, a hotbed of squash intrigue since 1976.

And why are some of the boxes coloured yellow, whilst others have no colour at all?

Now that's intriguing.

This is a good question - they tend to come in pairs, there hasn't been a yellow box for 20 years, and Grange 3 is yet to see one at all... they highlight where Grange finished top, and it's high time for some more!

Season 1990-1, the Grand Grangers only had one team in division 2, finishing 5th as far as I recall.

The super seconds were in division 3 after winning division 4 the previous year (agreed, there hasn't been a lot of yellow since!) and we finished 6th I do believe that year.

The line on the pretty picture may need changed slightly.

Well spotted linechecker, the ESSA archive concurs. Are you also hot on recent second team history? How did we get promotion to division 3 after finishing bottom of division 4 in 07/08?

Normally I'd say it was either bribery or blackmail. These are the most tried and tested methods.

But in this case it was more likely to have been the sad demise (or self-inflicted relegation) of Kirckaldy, Marcos, the Staff Club, Deer Park 2, David Lloyd 1 and our once-upon-a-time neighbours Edinburgh Accies 1 and 2. There may have been a couple of other teams, but we stayed up somehow.

And are we heading towards another yellow box this year?

What actually happened was Grange 2 earned themselves a place in Div 5, but with the influx of new talent from Marcos, Ron kindly gave us their team position in Div 3 for Grange 2, and the new Grange 3 took the Div 5 slot, giving us 2,3,5 rather than 2,5,5. As it turned out he was justified by good results in 08/09.

The new arrivals have transformed the teams. 3 consecutive promotions for Grange 1, first time in div 1 for 27 years, first ever 4th team, etc, etc.

Too early to say about yellow boxes, but we certainly have some momentum behind us and we're going for it!

Would the new league secretary have allowed these shenanigans to have taken place free of charge? Or would he have demanded some sort of payment?
